CALGARY, AB, May 27, 2024 /CNW/ - PBA Group of Companies (PBA) and its partner Concord Hospitality have officially started converting the former 12-storey office building, Canadian Centre (833 4th Ave. SW) into an Element Hotel by Westin. PBA saw an opportunity to satisfy the growing demand for additional room capacity in Downtown Calgary and to drive economic impact. As a 226-suite hotel, with fully furnished extended stay units, and a sophisticated design aesthetic, the Element Hotel will offer guests a warm and hospitable experience infused with cultural touches and elevated details.

"We're honoured to help take one of the first steps in transforming our downtown into a differentiated residential and recreational district that serves as a symbol of progressive inner city planning with this conversion," says James Scott, Senior Vice President, Planning and Development, PBA Group of Companies. "We're proud of our trusted partnership with Concord Hospitality and look forward to continuing the momentum with this novel conversion project which will have a notable impact in the community."

Announced in November as one of the City of Calgary's downtown office conversion partners, the Element Hotel is the first hospitality project as part of the Downtown Calgary Development Incentive Program. It will remove 170,000 square feet of unused office space from the city's core. This conversion project exemplifies the pivotal role that repurposing buildings plays in advancing sustainability principles within real estate, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability and urban revitalization – two key priorities in building resiliency in Calgary's downtown community.

By offering extended-stay hotel units, PBA is adding to a range of choices within the hospitality sector, while supporting Calgary's greater economic transition and welcoming a diverse mix of people to the downtown core. This development is expected to introduce a best-in-class model of flexible hospitality into the downtown market. Embracing a sustainable, nature-inspired aesthetic, the hotel offers expansive studios and one-bedroom suites, which are outfitted with fully equipped in-room kitchens, spa-inspired bathrooms and the Priority Bicycles program, where hotel guests can borrow bikes free of charge during their stay.

Infusing flexibility and convenience for groups, the Element brand pioneers a unique communal space known as Studio Commons. Centred around four guest rooms, this innovative concept promotes community by allowing guests to cook, gather and unwind together within shared kitchen and living room areas, fostering a sense of togetherness and relaxation.

"Coming off the success of our first hotel development, The Dorian, this project brings a particular level of excitement for us at PBA as we look to create another dynamic, Calgary-centric property, but this time, in the west end of downtown, where our company began its nearly 60-year history," says Scott. "Projects like this will help inject vitality into the community and contribute to Calgary's reputation as a global city."

With Tourism Calgary forecasting to welcome 8.7 million visitors in 2024 and $3.2 billion in tourism revenue for the local economy, new hospitality options like the Element Hotel will help cater to the increase in tourism and the diverse preferences of travellers. PBA continues to honour its mission of building possibility and community by offering a range of hospitality options that meaningfully contribute to the transformation of Calgary's downtown and the sustained growth and prosperity of the city's tourism industry.

Officially launched at the Hotel Association of Canada’s Annual Conference in Montreal, the platform is a partnership between Destination Canada, Statistics Canada and the Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and is one of the key initiatives outlined in Destination Canada’s 2030 Strategy – ‘A World of Opportunity’.

The new strategy, launched a week ago, sets bold and ambitious targets for Canada’s tourism sector and aims to reclaim and improve Canada’s global tourism competitiveness ranking and generate up to as much as $160 billion in revenue annually.

The launch of the new Data Collective also follows this week’s release of the World Economic Forum’s Travel and Tourism Development Index 2024 which shows that Canada has risen two places to rank 11th but more progress is required to increase Canada’s competitiveness and re-enter the top seven.

The platform has already been recognized for its impact and innovative potential, winning the Best Use of AI for Not-for-Profit or Non-Commercial Purposes Award at the 2024 DataIQ AI Awards in Miami on Tuesday.

It offers timely, relevant, and actionable insights to a wide range of stakeholders, including communities, tourism operators, government, small businesses, and large investors, allowing them to make critical decisions.

“The Data Collective allowed us to bring together the best and the brightest minds in the tech and tourism sectors to develop a system that is not only accessible by stakeholders across the entire tourism industry but provides a comprehensive picture of the state of the sector, from remote communities all the way up to the national level,” says Ferrigno.

Vancouver, Canada (May 22, 2024) – Baillie Lodges’ Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge, nestled in the remote wilderness of Canada’s Vancouver Island, officially reopens for the 2024 season on Thursday, May 23. New in 2024, the luxury eco-safari lodge – accessible only by seaplane or boat – will welcome its 2024 guests with a refined farm-to-table menu from the newly appointed Executive Chef Ben Godin, alongside refurbishments to the on-property restaurant, The Cookhouse, as well as additional sustainable initiatives.

New to the food & beverage program, Clayoquot welcomes Executive Chef Ben Godin to the lodge for his debut season. Chef Ben will use his fresh approach to create a sensational menu featuring local produce. Drawing inspiration from the awe-inspiring wilderness of Vancouver Island, Chef Ben delivers a heartfelt interpretation of the sights, scents, and tastes of the region to each guest's table. A keen forager, Chef Ben brings some of the region’s rarely sampled, hyper-local ingredients to the menu comprised of Foie Gras, Hakurei Turnip, Spruce Tip, Wombok, Fire Morel Mushrooms and more, offering guests a real taste of the surrounding wild and pristine nature.

To further enhance the lodge’s ESG programming, a new game-changing twist on sustainability has arrived at Clayoquot this season. In partnership with Hakai Energy Solutions, the team has outfitted the entire property to introduce seamless solar energy to power by installing a state-of-the-art solar and battery microgrid system at the remote lodge. The technology will reduce the lodge's diesel fuel consumption by around 80 percent each year, while the annual equivalent carbon offset is some 480,000 kilograms. In addition, the property is excited to offer e-bikes at the property, available for guests to utilize during their stay.

The lodge’s restaurant, the Cookhouse, has been redesigned with a stylish new look and feel for the 2024 season, and the soft renovations feature new furniture, fixtures, and artwork sourced from a local Tofino art gallery, House of Himwitsa, that pays homage to Clayoquot's ties with the local First Nations community. With mesmerizing views of the Clayoquot Sound and surrounding wilderness, the new and improved Cookhouse invites guests to enjoy extravagant, fresh meals from locally sourced ingredients such as Prairie Rancher Beef, Sable Fish and Spot Prawns and eclectic beverages from a wide selection of local British Columbia distillers.

The team at Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge led by General Manager, Sarah Cruse, is excited to welcome guests back to the property for the 2024 season. Guests who visit Clayoquot are poised to enjoy an abundance of pristine nature activities including hiking through old-growth forests, horseback riding through scenic trails, submerging in glacial-fed rivers to practice mindfulness and healing, and so much more. Guests also have the opportunity to discover renowned local flavors that reflect the natural surroundings of Vancouver Island and then unwind in the Healing Grounds Spa.

“Every summer we look forward to reopening our doors for discerning travelers, adventure seekers, and wellness fanatics,” Sarah Cruse said. “Clayoquot enables guests to experience exclusive luxury while enjoying natural, pristine surroundings. We are elated to welcome guests back for another memorable season.”

Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge is kicking off the season celebrating two new honors, as it was recently recognized as having one of the best suites in the world by Elite Traveler, and it was also included on Modern Luxury’s list of Best Off-the-Grid Luxury Destinations.
