VICTORIA, BC, April 9, 2026 | Inn at Laurel Point has been named a finalist for the Sustainability Award from the British Columbia Hotel Association as part of its annual Awards of Excellence program. The nomination recognizes the hotel’s long-standing leadership in environmental stewardship, responsible operations, and community engagement within British Columbia’s hotel industry.

Sustainability has been embedded in the hotel’s culture for more than 15 years. What began with a colleague-led Green Team in 2008 has grown into a cross-departmental Sustainability Committee representing ten departments. Guided by a comprehensive 2030 Sustainability Plan, the hotel integrates responsible operations, community partnerships, and colleague wellbeing into daily practice. Inn at Laurel Point became the first carbon-neutral hotel in British Columbia in 2009 and continues to reduce emissions through waste diversion, responsible purchasing, and operational efficiencies. The hotel holds four Green Keys and achieved Biosphere Certification in 2023, alongside three EcoStar Awards for environmental stewardship over the past decade.

“As a local and independent hotel, we feel a deep responsibility to care for the place we call home,” says Navid Sariolghalam, general manager at Inn at Laurel Point. “Being recognized as a finalist reflects our colleagues’ dedication to sustainability every day and our ongoing partnerships with the community. Earth Month is a chance to celebrate these efforts and invite both guests and colleagues to take part in initiatives that make a tangible impact.”

During Earth Month each April, the hotel highlights initiatives that engage both guests and colleagues, including support for kelp restoration through donations linked to reservations and F&B purchases, neighbourhood clean-ups, and programs encouraging low-impact choices throughout each stay. Guests can also participate through Duo Café & Bakery’s reusable mug loyalty program and mindful travel options, while colleagues take part in sustainability-focused events such as Power Hour clean-ups and internal idea-sharing programs.

As a social enterprise, Inn at Laurel Point pairs environmental initiatives with meaningful community impact. The hotel provides discounted room rates for patients traveling to Victoria for treatment at the BC Cancer Agency and offers complimentary respite stays each month for guests supported by The Cridge Centre for the Family. The hotel also supports Rainbow Kitchen through board leadership and colleague volunteerism and funds annual bursaries for hospitality students at Camosun College.
Inn at Laurel Point aligns its sustainability initiatives with seven priority goals from the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and supports sector-wide collaboration through sponsorship of the IMPACT Sustainability Travel & Tourism Conference.

Canadian-owned hotel brand Canalta Hotels (Canalta) is continuing its growth in Western Canada with two new hotel locations in Alberta, as well as a new loyalty initiative for its guests, centred around encouraging sustainability.

Canalta is expanding with two new locations opening today in the towns of Cochrane and High River. Both hotels are approximately 30 minutes outside of Calgary, and just a short drive to the Rocky Mountains and Banff National Park, making them an ideal choice for travelling sports teams, tourists and visiting family and friends.

The new Canalta Hotel in Cochrane features a recreation facility for kids and kids-at-heart staying at the hotel.

“It is our pleasure to welcome the Cochrane and High River hotels to the Canalta brand,” says Brooke Christianson, Vice President, Canalta Hotels. “Canalta is a great choice for Canadians staying local and travelling Western Canada this summer and we’re thrilled to now offer our exceptional service to guests at these two additional locations. ”

Both the Canalta Cochrane and the Canalta High River boast over 80 rooms and suites, featuring Canalta’s signature amenities including a heated indoor pool, hot tub and waterslide, free high-speed Wi-Fi and a complimentary deluxe breakfast.

Canalta’s Million Trees Movement aims to plant one million trees on behalf of guests by the end of 2027. A one night stay at a Canalta hotel now earns enough points to plant one tree through Canalta’s partnership with Wearth, an organization that plants trees on conserved land in Canada. Canalta’s guests will contribute to planting jack pines, white spruce and black spruce on a large plot of land in Smeaton, Northern Saskatchewan.

“We are creating an opportunity for our guests to use the points they earn to make a positive sustainable difference,” says Ryan Semchuk, Director of Marketing & Technology, Canalta Hotels. “This new initiative underscores Canalta’s commitment to sustainability in a tangible way where guests will see the meaningful benefits of being a Canalta Rewards member after just one stay.”

This unique offering is aimed at reaching people who may not traditionally make use of hotel loyalty programs. The program will allow travelers to offset their carbon footprint created by driving or flying to their destination by giving back to the environment through the tree planting program.

Guests can also use their points to redeem gift cards, earn free stays, and enjoy exclusive perks like late checkout, VIP parking, and more.
